It is important that drink plenty of water and have a small snack prior to shoveling snow to maintain your energy and prevent dehydration. If you are shoveling for a long period of time, be sure to take some water breaks too!</image:caption>

<image:title>Journey Well Blog - How to Talk to Your Physician About Massage Therapy - TALK TO YOUR MASSAGE THERAPIST</image:title>
<image:caption>Many massage therapists are trained in specific massage techniques. You should ask the therapist what types of techniques they offer and discuss a treatment plan that is right for your injury or condition. Not all massage therapists are able to directly bill for services, so you may have to claim the therapy yourself through your insurance company. Journey to Wellness, Inc currently does NOT bill insurance directly but we are able to provide you with a detailed receipt that will include your name, dob, the providers license, NPI, and tax ID, providers address, treatment codes, and cost of treatment received. This receipt along with a copy of your medical massage referral with diagnosis codes from your physician should allow your session to be considered a medical necessity, and more likely covered by your insurance provider.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journey Well Blog - How to Talk to Your Physician About Massage Therapy - UNDERSTAND THE BENEFITS OF MASSAGE</image:title>
<image:caption>Be a proactive participant in your health care. Not all physicians are familiar with the many benefits of therapeutic massage, so you will want to research the possibility that massage therapy is a good choice for treatment for your particular condition(s). If it is not a well-known or recognized treatment for your condition or injury, your doctor may be hesitant to give you the go-ahead to pursue massage therapy as a prescribed treatment. There are many conditions for which research has found massage therapy to be beneficial, including pain (e.g. back, neck, headache, carpal tunnel, post-operative, fibromyalgia, arthritic pain), muscle tension, stress relief, improved sleep, improved blood pressure, increased range of motion, improved quality of life (3).</image:caption>

<image:title>Journey Well Blog - From Everyday Stressors to COVID Stressors: Why We Need to Cope With and How to Manage the Physical Effects of Stress on Our Bodies - CORONAVIRUS STRESS</image:title>
<image:caption>Park et. al., researchers at the University of Connecticut, conducted a survey earlier this year in which respondents categorized the coronavirus pandemic stressors as 1) stress related to the virus, 2) stress related to changes in daily routine, and 3) financial stress (2). Respondents rated loss of job or income as the most stressful followed by risk of a loved one’s illness (2). Ninety seven percent of respondents reported that reading or hearing about the severity and contagiousness of coronavirus was the most common stressor (2).</image:caption>

<image:title>Journey Well Blog - From Everyday Stressors to COVID Stressors: Why We Need to Cope With and How to Manage the Physical Effects of Stress on Our Bodies - TENSION-PAIN-STRESS CONNECTION</image:title>
<image:caption>In addition to muscle tension being a common physical stress response, the worsening of tension or addition of pain can contribute to an increase in stress and vice-versa. Researchers beleive that finding ways to better manage stress to minimize the cortisol levels in the body can have a direct impact on the management of chronic or recurent pain (4).</image:caption>

<image:title>Journey Well Blog - From Everyday Stressors to COVID Stressors: Why We Need to Cope With and How to Manage the Physical Effects of Stress on Our Bodies - EVERYDAY STRESSORS</image:title>
<image:caption>The stress response from everyday stressors such as these is not always a bad thing though. Release of stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, is the body’s way of managing or preparing the body to “fight or flight”. This response can cause an increased pulse, increased respiration, a tightening of muscle tissue; as well as result in slowing less crucial body systems to the stress response such as the gastrointestinal and immune systems (1). When functioning optimally, the stress response can help motivate during an interview or test situation and/or prepare your body for more seriously stressful situations in the future like a job loss, accident, illness or death of a loved one, or potentially even navigating through a pandemic.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journey Well Blog - From Everyday Stressors to COVID Stressors: Why We Need to Cope With and How to Manage the Physical Effects of Stress on Our Bodies - CHRONIC STRESS</image:title>
<image:caption>Ideally, these situations of life stress whether routine, sudden, or traumatic will eventually lessen or come to a resolution of some kind. However, continual instances of acute stress and long-term, chronic stress are not good and can have a multitude of negative effects on the body by causing or worsening present health conditions and eventually resulting in very serious health risks and disease.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journey Well Blog - From Everyday Stressors to COVID Stressors: Why We Need to Cope With and How to Manage the Physical Effects of Stress on Our Bodies - WHAT IS STRESS?</image:title>
<image:caption>Stress is a natural response or defense mechanism of the body that everyone experiences at one point or another. Enjoyed a thrill ride on a roller coaster or downhill ski slope? Been in an argument or disagreement with someone? Faced a deadline for work or school? Faced challenges with childcare? These are all examples of routine life stressors.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Know Before You Go - Booking information</image:title>
<image:caption>All sessions are by appointment only, office hours are listed but may vary. Appointments may be made via phone, text, email, or online self-booking. I currently use a smart scheduler, so if my day is open you will see all of my availability. Otherwise, you may only see the next 1 or 2 slots available based on what has already been scheduled. If you are having difficulty finding an appointment there is also a wait-list feature you may add yourself to in the patient portal! NEW (and returning) patients can make an appointment online, but new patients must first register and create a log-in within the patient portal. You will receive an emailed registration confirmation, followed by an emailed appointment confirmation once you have selected a date/time that fits your schedule, and finally you will receive an email to complete the health history intake form and acknowledgment of clinic policies. There are some contraindications and caution areas surrounding massage, so it is important you complete this form to the best of your ability prior to your visit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Know Before You Go - What to Expect</image:title>
<image:caption>Never had therapeutic massage before? Uncertain what to expect? Have no fear, your therapist is here to set your mind at ease. All work that you receive is always performed within your tolerance/ comfort level. This is not a “no pain, no gain” practice. Your therapist will guide you every step of the way and instill some beneficial breathwork techniques as needed. However, if you prefer to learn more first, see our services menu above to see more detail on the various types of appointments and treatments available to you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Know Before You Go - How quickly will I find relief?</image:title>
<image:caption>Whether your goals are centered on pain relief, stress relief, improvements in range of motion, post-surgical or injury rehabilitation, it will take time and consistency of care to reach your goals. Massage is not a magic pill that will instantly “fix” or “cure” you; rather it is a better alternative with far fewer side effects and certainly a complementary therapy to other treatments you may be receiving for your condition. While you may experience some immediate relief after one session, pain, especially chronic, pain does return. Your therapist will work with you to determine the best course of massage treatment and self-care for you and change that plan as you progress. Pain is a complex thing, created by your habits, the work that you do, and your past and present injuries. It's also strongly influenced by things like stress and mindset, so not an easy thing to change in a single afternoon! Wellness is a journey... It's more likely that pain relief will come over the course of weeks or months. As massage becomes a part of your routine, your body will begin to realize that it does not need all that habitual tension, and your pain will become lessened. With each massage, the effects should build. After your 4th massage session, the pain will decrease considerably, and it won't return to the same level as when it began. After the 8th session, you might have difficulty remembering what your old pain felt like. There will be ups and downs, but the overall trend should be "down." The effects of regular massage are long-lasting. In studies that used a 12-week protocol of weekly massage, the effects stuck around for at least 6 months after the final massage. Most of the studies that show substantial benefits use a weekly protocol, but good results can also be achieved from twice-monthly massage. If you're in pain, begin with weekly massage for about six weeks, and then taper off as you recover. If that seems more frequent than you can manage, then start with what you can! Just realize that frequency and regularity are big factors in the success of treatment.</image:caption>
