What is Therapeutic Massage?

Therapeutic massage describes any type of massage technique that helps relieve pain, reduce stress, and work toward resolution of a specific complaint. Many still assume that therapeutic massage means deep tissue massage; however, even though “deep tissue massage” is still very commonly referred to as a technique style in the industry, it is an antiquated and deceptive way of viewing massage. “Deep" is a pressure, not a technique. Many different styles of massage can utilize varying degrees of pressure. Depending on your conditions and goals, despite popular opinion, deeper pressure is not always better. There are many layers of muscle in the body that may or may not be contributing to he symptoms you feel, an experienced therapist will know which layers of muscle need to be accessed and how best to access them to help you with your problem.

So, what techniques or styles are utilized in a Therapeutic Massage at Journey to Wellness, Inc? The therapist is trained in application of a variety of techniques for a variety of different conditions. Some of these technique may include myofascial work, neuromuscular therapy, trigger point therapy, stretching techniques, mobilization, kinesiotaping, acupressure, Massage Cupping, Swedish massage techniques for relaxation, and Reiki Energy Therapy. Another form of therapeutic massage that is offered in this clinic is Thai Massage, but is not given on the massage table. Additionally, if you are not certain which type(s) of massage will be most beneficial to you or you need help with your post-massage self-care routine you can schedule a consultation session.

What Can I Expect with Therapeutic Massage?

At Journey to Wellness, Inc. your therapist will collect a detailed medical history and talk with you about your conditions, concerns, and symptoms to help you to determine the type of massage that might be best for you and your desired goals. Your therapist will also always inquire about your pressure preferences and talk with you about what may be best for you.

Some more sports-oriented therapies or Thai massage may be done with the patients fully clothed. During a typical therapeutic massage session on a massage table, your therapist will ask you to undress and cover yourself with sheets/blankets. All body areas not presently receiving work by the therapist will remain covered.

Patients can experience a wide range of responses to massage therapy either during (e.g., moving or changing position, yawning, change in breath, change in temperature, stomach gurgling, sleeping, emotional feelings or memories, energy shifts, etc.) or following care (e.g., discomfort, soreness, petechiae or temporary skin discoloration, sleepiness, etc.) . If you are ever unsure about a response to care, please do not hesitate to ask.

Should I Receive Therapeutic Massage?

There are also many benefits (e.g. pain relief, stress/anxiety relief, decreased tension, increased mobility, improved sleep, gastrointestinal relief, injury recovery, etc.) related to massage therapy the therapist is happy to discuss with you as they relate to your specific condition(s).

A growing body of research supports the use of massage therapy for mental, physical heath and wellness, these potential benefits continue to be studied. Just a few areas for which research has shown the effectiveness of massage therapy include pain relief, as a complement to other treatment, for mental health, and rehabilitation from injury. Below are just some of the studies that have shown these benefits.

Overall, Therapeutic Massage is the best form of massage to receive specifically because it means you are working with an experienced Massage Therapist who can help you determine the safest, most effective techniques for you.

There are instances in which massage may need to be modified (e.g. cuts, burns, inflammation, severe varicose veins, DVT, etc.), when certain techniques may not be appropriate (e.g. pregnancy, osteoporosis, joint dislocation, etc.), or when massage may even be completely contraindicated (e.g., fever, contagious disease, under the influence, etc.). Additionally, in some instances further guidance from your physician may be necessary (e.g. cancer, uncontrolled diabetes, uncontrolled blood pressure, cardiovascular conditions, etc.).
